{"id":1418,"date":"2015-11-09T18:25:21","date_gmt":"2015-11-09T18:25:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs-dev.lib.uconn.edu\/nclc\/?p=1418"},"modified":"2015-11-09T18:25:21","modified_gmt":"2015-11-09T18:25:21","slug":"the-story-of-richard-scarrys-busytown-with-special-guest-lecturer-huck-scarry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs-dev.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/2015\/11\/09\/the-story-of-richard-scarrys-busytown-with-special-guest-lecturer-huck-scarry\/","title":{"rendered":"The Story of Richard Scarry\u2019s Busytown with Special Guest Lecturer Huck Scarry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs-dev.lib.uconn.edu\/nclc\/files\/2015\/11\/ScarryBusiestpeopleeverP7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1420\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs-dev.lib.uconn.edu\/nclc\/files\/2015\/11\/ScarryBusiestpeopleeverP7-232x300.jpg\" alt=\"ScarryBusiestpeopleeverP7\" width=\"232\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Busytown, the\u00a0bustling\u00a0small town and home to such resident characters as Huckle Cat, Lowly Worm, Mr. Frumble, Police Sergeant Murphy, Mr. Fixit, and Hilda Hippo, was first depicted in the book\u00a0<em>Richard Scarry&#8217;s Busy, Busy World<\/em>. \u00a0The fictional\u00a0town was a central feature in several Richard Scarry books and has been depicted through time in a variety of formats, including games, toys, activity books, and an animated series.<\/p>\n<p>Richard Scarry, the popular and much-loved American author and illustrator of over 300 children&#8217;s books, is known for such classics as<em> Richard Scarry&#8217;s Best Word Book Ever<\/em> released in 1963, <em>Richard Scarry&#8217;s Busy, Busy World<\/em> (1965),\u00a0<em>Richard Scarry&#8217;s Storybook Dictionary<\/em> (1966), and <em>What Do People Do All Day<\/em> (1968). \u00a0Selling millions of copies during his lifetime, many Scarry books, though\u00a0regularly updated and re-issused, have never been out of print. \u00a0Several have have been translated into over 20 languages.<\/p>\n<p>Join us tomorrow evening, <strong>Tuesday November 10, 6:00pm<\/strong> for a special guest lecture <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs-dev.lib.uconn.edu\/nclc\/files\/2014\/09\/Huck-Scarry-21.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1243\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs-dev.lib.uconn.edu\/nclc\/files\/2014\/09\/Huck-Scarry-21-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Huck Scarry 2\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>&#8220;<strong>The Story of <em>Richard Scarry&#8217;s Busytown<\/em><\/strong>&#8221; with Scarry&#8217;s son, Richard &#8220;Huck&#8221; Scarry II. Also an artist and author of children\u2019s books, Huck Scarry published\u00a0a new Scarry picture book for the first time in the U.S. since the elder Scarry&#8217;s death in 1994. \u00a0With\u00a0<em>Richard Scarry&#8217;s Best Lowly Worm Book Ever!<\/em> Huck Scarry\u00a0began a season of re-releasing Scarry&#8217;s classics to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Richard Scarry&#8217;s best-known book, <em>Richard Scarry&#8217;s Best Word Book Ever.<\/em> \u00a0The <strong>guest lecture event will take place in the Class of 1947 Room, Homer Babbidge Library, University of Connecticut<\/strong> in Storrs. \u00a0The lecture is free and open to the public and is presented in conjunction with the <a href=\"http:\/\/bookfair.uconn.edu\/2015.htm\">24th Annual Connecticut Children&#8217;s Book Fair<\/a> taking place at UConn on Saturday and Sunday, November 14 and 15, 2015.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/doddcenter.uconn.edu\/asc\/findaids\/scarry\/MSS19970048.html\">Richard Scarry&#8217;s personal papers and\u00a0archives<\/a>, preserved and available in Archives and Special Collections at the Dodd Research Center,\u00a0document the creation, production, and distribution of his books for children. The archives are part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs-dev.lib.uconn.edu\/nclc\/about\/\">Northeast Children&#8217;s Literature Collection<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0contain materials and correspondence concerning Scarry&#8217;s early work, with Western Publishing and Little Golden Books, beginning in the 1950s.
