{"id":177,"date":"2011-08-04T14:20:05","date_gmt":"2011-08-04T14:20:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/uconnnclc.wordpress.com\/?p=177"},"modified":"2011-08-04T14:20:05","modified_gmt":"2011-08-04T14:20:05","slug":"tomie-depaola-celebrates-the-wilder-award-in-style-of-course","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs-dev.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/2011\/08\/04\/tomie-depaola-celebrates-the-wilder-award-in-style-of-course\/","title":{"rendered":"Tomie dePaola celebrates the Wilder Award in style (of course)!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Suzy Staubach and I were invited to attend a lovely brunch at Tomie&#8217;s house to celebrate his being awarded the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award, given by the American Library Association which &#8220;&#8230;\u201chonors an author or illustrator whose books, published in the United States, have made, over a period of years, a substantial and lasting contribution to literature for children.\u201d\u00a0 The dePaola house is absolutely charming, with room after room where wonderful sculptures, artwork, toys, candles, antiques, and dePaola creations abound.\u00a0 One piece of artwork in particular caught my eye:\u00a0 a pencil and ink drawing of Tomie as a Saint, with a drink in one hand and a paintbrush in the other, surrounded by children holding their hands out in begging posture.\u00a0 Trina Schart Hyman, one of Tomie&#8217;s dear friends, was working on the drawing when she left for the hospice care where she later passed away.\u00a0 The drawing was still on her drawing table.\u00a0 She didn&#8217;t have time to ink in the entire piece but she did get the drink glass done!<\/p>\n<p>Check out Suzy&#8217;s blog at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.willowtreepottery.us\/Willow_Tree_Pottery\/BiblioPotter\/Entries\/2011\/8\/1_Tomie_dePaola_Pot_Collector.html\">www.willowtreepottery.us\/Willow_Tree_Pottery\/BiblioPotter\/Entries\/2011\/8\/1_Tomie_dePaola_Pot_Collector.html<\/a> and Elizabeth Bluemle&#8217;s post with lots of photos at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/\">http:\/\/blogs.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/<\/a>.<br \/>\nTomie&#8217;s home is surrounded by elegant gardens, with benches in strategic places to best view the grounds.\u00a0 There is a small hidden garden outside of a sliding glass door and a very inviting swimming pool.\u00a0 Almost heaven, New Hampshire.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_180\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs-dev.lib.uconn.edu\/nclc\/files\/2011\/08\/suzy-tomie-terri-copy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-180\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-180\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs-dev.lib.uconn.edu\/nclc\/files\/2011\/08\/suzy-tomie-terri-copy.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"243\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-180\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">l to r: Suzy Staubach, General Books Manager, UConn Co-op; Tomie dePaola, Wilder Award recipient for 2011; Terri J.
