Digital Mosaic site at <a title=\"New Haven Railroad Valuation Maps\" href=\"http:\/\/images.lib.uconn.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/images.lib.uconn.edu\/<\/a>.\u00a0 Although we have heard from many\u00a0how\u00a0useful it is to have the maps accessible to off-site researchers, we&#8217;ve also heard that the vagaries of ContentDM, the database system where the maps sit, don&#8217;t help them\u00a0follow the railroad line from point to point.\u00a0 The maps, which are each one mile footprints of the railroad tracks as they follow the complicated New Haven Railroad system as it was in 1915, have always been rather isolated from, and unlinked to, each other.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2014\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/doddcenter.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/08\/hartfordmap.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2014\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2014 \" src=\"http:\/\/doddcenter.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/08\/hartfordmap.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"128\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs-dev.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/files\/2011\/08\/hartfordmap.jpg 597w, https:\/\/blogs-dev.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/files\/2011\/08\/hartfordmap-300x128.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs-dev.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/files\/2011\/08\/hartfordmap-500x213.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2014\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">New Haven Railroad Valuation Map of Hartford, Connecticut, now accessible from a map index at http:\/\/magic.lib.uconn.edu\/mash_up\/nynhhrr_index.html<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Happily, that glitch is now overcome, thanks\u00a0to the\u00a0the magnificent efforts of\u00a0the Map and Geographic Information Center, better known as MAGIC, an important special library within the UConn Libraries system.\u00a0 MAGIC, headed by Geographic Information Systems Librarian Michael Howser, has created a map index that now\u00a0allows researchers to follow the railroad lines on a map and click at any point to bring up the 1915 valuation map.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You will find the index at <a title=\"New Haven Railroad Valuation Map Index\" href=\"http:\/\/magic.lib.uconn.edu\/mash_up\/nynhhrr_index.html\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/magic.lib.uconn.edu\/mash_up\/nynhhrr_index.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Isn&#8217;t this great?!\u00a0One could even say that this is\u00a0truly, well, magical.\u00a0\u00a0Tools like this make viewing the maps so much easier.\u00a0 You will see, though, that as of this moment you can search only the Connecticut railroad valuation maps.\u00a0 MAGIC has plans to, in time,\u00a0complete the index, to encompass all of the maps that are currently in the Digital Mosaic, which include Massachusetts, Rhode Island and eastern New York.\u00a0 Something else I want to point out is that the index makes it obvious that there are gaps in the system, that there are sections where, although the railroad ran between some points, there are no maps that covered these areas.\u00a0 The fault of this lies in the fact that our original set of valuation maps was never absolutely complete, and that is reflected in the online maps.<\/p>\n<p>I want to extend my most sincere thanks to Michael Howser and his staff, particularly Geography PhD student Jie Lin, who made this index a\u00a0reality.\u00a0\u00a0 You&#8217;ve made a lot of railroad researchers VERY happy!<\/p>\n<p>Laura Smith, Curator for Business, Railroad and Labor Collections<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Many of our researchers have successfully accessed the online New Haven Railroad Valuation Maps, from the UConn Libraries&#8217;
