{"id":5434,"date":"2015-04-01T16:06:16","date_gmt":"2015-04-01T16:06:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs-dev.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/?p=5434"},"modified":"2015-06-16T16:35:22","modified_gmt":"2015-06-16T16:35:22","slug":"uconns-mascot-a-ram","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs-dev.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/2015\/04\/01\/uconns-mascot-a-ram\/","title":{"rendered":"UConn&#8217;s mascot &#8212; a ram?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs-dev.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/files\/2015\/04\/1988-0010_ph0624.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5435\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs-dev.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/files\/2015\/04\/1988-0010_ph0624.jpg\" alt=\"UConn mascot\" width=\"600\" height=\"418\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs-dev.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/files\/2015\/04\/1988-0010_ph0624.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blogs-dev.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/files\/2015\/04\/1988-0010_ph0624-300x209.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs-dev.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/files\/2015\/04\/1988-0010_ph0624-430x300.jpg 430w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a little known historical fact that in the mid-1930s, when the Connecticut State College (an earlier name for what became the University of Connecticut) was pondering what would be its mascot, the ram shown above, named Sir Ram-a-lot, was seriously considered, edging out in student polling over the next most likely mascot, the Eskimo husky dog known as Jonathan. \u00a0The student newspaper quoted freshman Francis Pickering as saying &#8220;What kind of stupid name is Jonathan for a dog? \u00a0I think Sir Ram-a-lot would invoke the kind of fear and respect we need on the football field against opposing teams.&#8221; \u00a0Fortunately the students&#8217;s preference for the ram was contested\u00a0by the new college president, Albert N.
