{"id":5462,"date":"2015-04-10T16:05:02","date_gmt":"2015-04-10T16:05:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs-dev.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/?p=5462"},"modified":"2015-04-10T19:50:41","modified_gmt":"2015-04-10T19:50:41","slug":"nyc-alice-notley-reading-ed-sanders-drawings-and-daybooks-sharon-olds-pens-poems-for-you","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs-dev.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/2015\/04\/10\/nyc-alice-notley-reading-ed-sanders-drawings-and-daybooks-sharon-olds-pens-poems-for-you\/","title":{"rendered":"@ NYC: Alice Notley Reading \/ Ed Sanders Drawings and Daybooks \/ Sharon Olds Pens Poems for You"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs-dev.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/files\/2015\/04\/Nov09Glyph5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-5466\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs-dev.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/files\/2015\/04\/Nov09Glyph5-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"Nov09Glyph5\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs-dev.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/files\/2015\/04\/Nov09Glyph5-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/blogs-dev.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/files\/2015\/04\/Nov09Glyph5.jpg 209w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/a>Long a hub for hearing the poetry and poetic voices of the <strong>now<\/strong>,\u00a0New York City next week and the week after hosts some of the best poetry events and exhibitions happening during this National Poetry Month.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, April 14, the prolific and prize-winning poet <a href=\"http:\/\/centerforthehumanities.org\/program\/alice-notley-conversation-erica-kaufman\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Alice Notley<\/strong> will read her work at the City University of New York<\/a> Center for the Humanities. \u00a0Erica Kaufman, editor of the ever-fresh and\u00a0propitious\u00a0Lost &amp; Found publication series, an initiative of the CUNY Center for the Humanities, will lead a conversation with Notley during the program.<\/p>\n<p>While you are in the City, see the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.poetshouse.org\/programs-and-events\/exhibitions\/seeking-glyph-edward-sanders\" target=\"_blank\">rarely exhibited notebooks and drawings of the poet, musician, activist Ed Sander<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/centerforthehumanities.org\/exhibition\/seeking-glyph-glyphic-works-edward-sanders\" target=\"_blank\">s<\/a> on display at the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.poetshouse.org\/about\/tour-our-space\/visiting\" target=\"_blank\"> Poet&#8217;s House<\/a>, located on its serene perch at 10 River Terrace. \u00a0<span style=\"color: #231f20\">During the course of a long and diverse career <\/span><strong style=\"color: #231f20\">Sanders<\/strong><span style=\"color: #231f20\">\u00a0used a glyphic alphabet, a script of hand-drawn characters, symbols, and graphemes. \u00a0In his words, &#8220;a Glyph is a drawing that is charged with literary, emotional, historical or mythic, and poetic intensity.&#8221; <\/span>C<span style=\"color: #231f20\">urated by\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"color: #231f20\">Ammiel Alcalay<\/strong><span style=\"color: #231f20\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"color: #231f20\">Kendra Sullivan<\/strong><span style=\"color: #231f20\">, the show displays pictures and manuscripts by Sanders from 1962 to the present.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, April 23,\u00a0Pulitzer Prize-winner\u00a0<strong>Sharon Olds<\/strong>,\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Bob Holman<\/strong>, founder of the Bowery Poetry Caf\u00e9, <strong>will sit in a booth<\/strong> (inspired by Lucy&#8217;s booth from the Peanuts comic strip) and write poems for those who request one. \u00a0<strong><em>The Poet is In<\/em><\/strong><strong>: <\/strong>takes place in the new Fulton Street Station and features\u00a0an\u00a0array of award-winning poets, including NY State Poet Laureate\u00a0<strong>Marie Howe. \u00a0<\/strong>Free<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0open to the public, <strong>11 a.m. to 6 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Long a hub for hearing the poetry and poetic voices of the now,\u00a0New York City next week and the week after hosts some of the best poetry events and exhibitions happening during this National Poetry Month.
