[Read more about the correspondence between Teale and Carson on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs-dev.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/2015\/02\/25\/nature-wondrous-and-fragile-the-correspondence-of-rachel-carson-and-edwin-way-teale-preserved-in-the-edwin-way-teale-papers\/\" target=\"_blank\">the blog post &#8220;Nature, Wondrous and Fragile&#8221;<\/a> by Richard Telford.]<\/p>\n<p><em>Silent Spring <\/em>was published in September 1962 and became a national bestseller. \u00a0The film features rarely-seen images and home movies, unpublished letters and writings, and explores the science and public debate surrounding\u00a0pesticide-use ignited by the book. Special features can be found on the American Experience website, including an introductory essay, bonus video, and an interview with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and science writer Elizabeth Kolbert.<\/p>\n<p>Join us on Thursday, February 2 at 4:00pm to hear\u00a0Elizabeth Kolbert&#8217;s lecture &#8220;The Sixth Extinction&#8221; at UConn in the\u00a0Dodd Research Center. \u00a0The event is FREE and open to the public, no registration is required. \u00a0The <strong>event will be live-streamed,<\/strong> details can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/mediasite.dl.uconn.edu\/Mediasite\/Play\/50e10fdefb3846eeb7739d5bd63ade371d\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Elizabeth Kolbert is a staff writer for <em>The New Yorker<\/em> and won the Pulitzer for <em>The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History<\/em> and <em>Field Notes from a Catastrophe: Man, Nature, and Climate Change<\/em> in 2015. Her series on global warming, <em>The Climate of Man<\/em>, from which the book was adapted, won the American Association for the Advancement of Science\u2019s magazine writing award and a National Academies communications award.
