The U.S. Census Bureau will hold a webinar on June 2, 2011 at 2:30pm prior to the state-by-state releases of the 2010 Census Summary File 1 in June through August. You will learn about the topics to be released in the summary file, how the release process will work and how to access the data.

The webinar will consist of a simultaneous audio conference and online presentation. You will be able to ask questions during the audio conference once the presentation is complete.

5/26/2011 – New Data About Nation’s Age and Sex Composition and Hispanic Population

The U.S. Census Bureau will hold an audio and Web news conference to release the next two briefs from the 2010 Census. During the event, Census Bureau demographers will discuss the changes in the nation’s age and sex composition, including changes in the median age and sex ratios. The demographers will also discuss the growth and geographic distribution of Hispanic origin groups, such as Mexican, Puerto Rican or Cuban.

Workshops announced: Locating Census 2010 Data using the NEW American FactFinder

The Connecticut State Data Center will hold a series of workshops beginning later this month to introduce the NEW American FactFinder, in the Homer Babbidge Library at UConn’s Storrs campus. For information on dates and times, and to register, please go to:

The U.S. Census Bureau introduced a NEW American FactFinder online Census data tool with enhanced searching and data display capabilities in conjunction with the release of 2010 Census data. In this workshop you will learn how to use the new American FactFinder to locate and download data – and create thematic maps – from a wide variety of population, economic, and housing information in the 2010 and 2000 decennial Censuses. From information on individual neighborhoods or zip codes, to state- or national-level data, the new American FactFinder is a powerful tool for navigating the vast amounts of data made available by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The new American FactFinder will also soon replace the legacy American FactFinder as the platform for retrieving data from the American Community Survey (the ongoing Census program which produces data on educational attainment, income, occupation, marital status, and other detailed social and economic characteristics), and will also deliver data from the Economic Census. 2010 Demographic Profiles for Select States to be released May 5

Profiles for the District of Columbia, Florida, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia

What: Next week, the U.S. Census Bureau will release 2010 Census Demographic Profiles for the District of Columbia, Florida, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia. In May, the Census Bureau will provide data for 13 states each week on age and sex distributions, race, Hispanic or Latino origin, household relationship and type, the group quarters population, housing occupancy (including vacancy status) and tenure (whether the housing occupant owns or rents).

Profiles will be available for each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico down to the place/functioning minor civil division-level. Profiles for the United States, regions and divisions will be available at the end of May with the final states’ releases.

When: The news release and data for these 13 states will be released Thursday, May 5. The data will be available in American FactFinder <http://www.census.gov>.

Mashup Madness: Using Google Tools to Create Maps on the Web: May 24 and July 12

This one-day training covers the basics of Google Maps and Google Earth. Topics covered include methods for creating customized maps using Google My Maps, Google Earth, KML and Google Fusion Tables. Participants will also learn methods for collaborative mapping and techniques for embedding interactive maps on a website. No prior GIS experience is necessary.

Pictures, Points and Places: An Introduction to GPS: June 9-10 and July 28-29

This two-day training covers the basics of GPS technology. Participants will learn how to use handheld GPS receivers in the field to collect geospatial data and georeferenced photographs. The training also covers methods for integrating GPS data and geolocated photographs into a GIS (MapWindow) and Google Earth. No prior GIS experience is necessary.

Geospatial Technologies at Work: An Introduction to GIS: June 22-24

A three-day intensive training covering introductory topics for desktop GIS. Teaching software is ArcGIS10. Topics covered include: data management strategies, connecting to geospatial data over the internet, working with geodatabases, understanding tabular data, symbolizing and classifying data, creating maps for printing and production, performing spatial data queries, and basic editing techniques. No prior GIS experience is necessary.

Geospatial Collaboration: New Common Ground Conference May 6-7, 2011

The Harvard Center for Geographic Analysis, together with metaLAB@Harvard, is cosponsoring the 2011 spring conference on *Geospatial Collaboration: New Common Ground*. This two-day conference is open to all. It brings web-mapping experts from across the country to share their knowledge and experience, and to envision what lies ahead in the dazzling field of mapping on the Internet. Speakers will introduce ideas, systems, tools, and visions, and present case studies and discuss challenges. Some will offer live demos and hands-on training. This conference provides a forum for geospatial technologists, developers, academics and end users to engage in dialog and help shape the future of geospatial technology.

More Working Women Than Men Have College Degrees, Census Bureau Reports

On Tuesday April 26, 2011 the U.S. Census Bureau released data on pertaining to the highest level of education completed based on data from 2010. According to this report, among the employed population 25 years of age and older, 37% of women had attained a bachelor’s degree or more as of 2010, compared to 35% of men.

This report is based on data from the tabulations on Educational Attainment in the United States: 2010 and represents the most detailed look ever at years of school completed. Additional data and highlights are available at:
