{"id":221,"date":"2011-08-04T19:11:00","date_gmt":"2011-08-04T19:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs-dev.lib.uconn.edu\/outsidetheneatline\/2011\/08\/04\/new-york-new-haven-hartford-railroad-valuation-maps\/"},"modified":"2011-08-04T19:11:00","modified_gmt":"2011-08-04T19:11:00","slug":"new-york-new-haven-hartford-railroad-valuation-maps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs-dev.lib.uconn.edu\/outsidetheneatline\/2011\/08\/04\/new-york-new-haven-hartford-railroad-valuation-maps\/","title":{"rendered":"New York New Haven Hartford Railroad Valuation Maps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Years ago the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhrhta.org\/\">New Haven Railroad Historical and Technical Association<\/a> donated 3,000 + \u00a0railroad valuation maps to the <a href=\"http:\/\/doddcenter.uconn.edu\/collections\/digital.htm\">Thomas J. Dodd Research Center<\/a> at the University of Connecticut. \u00a0These maps depict the rail line and features adjacent from 1915 &#8211; 1916 for the states of Connecticut, Rhode Island,\u00a0Massachusetts, and New York.<\/p>\n<div>Since the maps were donated a stream of graduate students and staff, both at the Thomas J. Dodd Research Center and at <a href=\"http:\/\/magic.lib.uconn.edu\/\">MAGIC<\/a>, have been scanning these maps, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Georeference\">georeferencing<\/a> them and creating a comprehensive index. \u00a0The most notable of these graduate students at MAGIC was Dean Chauvin. \u00a0Dean wrote a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/digitalcommons.uconn.edu\/uccgia_papers\/5\/\">technical\u00a0article describing the process<\/a> which was the basis for all future work on this project. \u00a0Dean, I know I speak for the graduate students that came after you when I say thank you for your\u00a0foresight\u00a0in documenting your efforts in such a clear way! Additionally, if your <a href=\"http:\/\/www.python.org\/\">Python<\/a> savy, there are some nifty scripts that automate large parts of this process included in the appendices of Dean&#8217;s article. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>MAGIC has recently released the index for the\u00a0New York New Haven Hartford Railroad Valuation Maps in the following formats:\u00a0Google Maps Preview,\u00a0Google Earth KML file,\u00a0Shapefiles, and\u00a0CSV (Figure 1).<\/p>\n<table align=\"center\" cellpadding=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" style=\"margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;text-align: center\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/magic.lib.uconn.edu\/connecticut_data.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"69\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-NDVJAeWOlSw\/TjrpbABxruI\/AAAAAAAABVM\/xzUHHUW-cxY\/s400\/RRIndexData.png\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center\">Figure 1<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<div style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/magic.lib.uconn.edu\/connecticut_data.html\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>Below is a screen capture of the Google Map Preview (Figure 2). \u00a0Clicking on the image will take you directly to the interactive map. You can search any place in Connecticut and by clicking on any bounding box the resulting balloon you will give the option to view the digital scan of the original map from the Thomas J.
